November 22, 2020: Board of Directors announcement

Dear Cruisers Family,

It’s with great sadness, the Board of Directors announces Paul Christou’s resignation as the President of Cruisers Sports. Over the years, he has played a critical role in the development and success of the organization. Paul has coached in many divisions of the Para Ice Hockey program. He served on the Board as the Director of Fundraising, before stepping into his leadership role as President. Paul was also involved in building strong relationships with several corporate donors, while supporting various club events and initiatives throughout his tenure. We would like to thank Paul for his contributions and his leadership during these unprecedented times.

Additionally, we regret to announce that Celine DeRegt has also resigned from her position as Vice President of Cruisers Sports. Celine played an integral role in organizing, managing and facilitating the club’s strategic planning initiatives. She also authored the Cruisers Sports monthly newsletters and assisted with the planning of Social Saturdays. We want to thank Celine for her creativity and contributions to the club.

As difficult as it will be to replace these dedicated individuals, please be assured Cruisers Sports will continue to seamlessly lead the organization. During this transition, Kathy Ludwig has been appointed by the Board of Directors to be the interim President until our next AGM. Kathy will step down as the Director of Wheelchair Basketball but will continue to support the program. We thank Kathy for taking on this responsibility.

Business of the Board of Directors will continue as usual. The Cruisers Board of Directors understands now, more than ever, the importance of coming together as a team to support one another. Our priority has been and will continue to be the athletes and their families.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to reach out to Kathy Ludwig at: president@cruisers-sports.com

November 20, 2020: Important COVID-19 update

Hello Cruisers Family,

The health and well-being of our Cruisers community has always been at the core of our decision making as we’ve worked towards return to sport. As the Ontario Government and our Public Health Authority have continued to say throughout this pandemic, we are all in this together and our Cruisers community must do its part in helping curb the spread of COVID-19.

We know that the last few months have not been without their challenges as we all are adapting to the ever changing nature of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Board of Directors met last night to discuss the current situation and recommendations from our public health authorities and have made the difficult decision to suspend in-person programming for the remainder of 2020.

This decision followed the belief that we must do our part to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and with the expectation that major restrictions would be put in place shortly. Today it was announced that the Peel and Toronto Health Regions are going into a lockdown starting Monday morning. Although Halton region is not under lockdown orders, we feel it is safer and more responsible to operate with the same policies in every location we operate in. Any decision we make to adjust our return to play protocols will depend on the Government orders and public health authority recommendation and we will continue to keep the membership apprised when we start planning for the 2021 season.

We are committed to returning to play when it is recommended to do so again and will continue to provide updates to our membership on opportunities for us to connect virtually as we move through this challenging time. Undoubtedly you will have questions and we are available to answer them as best we can. Please feel free to reach out to any of the Board of Directors and we will get back to you.

November 19, 2020: Your November update!!

Hey Cruisers Family!

Over the last month we have seen some programing come back either with extended virtual programs for our members or adapted in person programs where possible.  It has been great to see our community come together once again in the various forms.  We also want to send a shout-out of thanks for everyone’s patience as we regularly adjust to new rules and experiment with different ways to connect with as many of you as possible.

Multi-Sports Director Update

It is with great sadness that we announce that Tiffany Gaudette-Cina has stepped down from her role as Multi-Sports Director.  Tiffany has been a huge supporter of the Cruisers as both an athlete and in a leadership role.  She took over the Multi-Sports program in 2018 and oversaw this along with the Boccia program for the club.  Besides being an advocate for the kids in the club she also organized the annual Linda Beacham Summer Fun Day and developed the Cruisers first social media calendar.  All her efforts were hugely appreciated, and she will be greatly missed on the Board.  Tiffany has indicated that she remains a Cruisers as both an athlete with a specific target in getting to the upcoming Tokyo Paralympic Games and in a leadership role coaching Boccia.

At this time the Board has asked Shawn Courchesne to step in as Director of Multi-Sports for the remainder of the term.  Shawn already plays a big role with this group and this role aligns well with his role for the Cruisers Sports Schools’ Program which is currently on hold due to COVID-19.

Social Media Update

In an attempt to fill the social media position, we recently put out a request for volunteers.  Joshua Watson and Sherene McDonald have put their names forward to help the club on this front.  They will be forming a small committee with oversight from the Board to support our needs and evolve the foundation built by Tiffany. Please watch the Cruisers accounts in Twitter, Instagram and Facebook in the coming days as we engage with our membership again through these mediums.  Thanks in advance to Josh and Sherene.

Save the Date: 2020 Virtual Christmas Event

As 2020 has taken us all down the virtual path we are very excited to once again bring everyone together for this years Christmas event.  Please save the date December 19th, 2020 at 7pm and mark it on your calendars for this year’s celebrations.  More details will follow in the coming weeks so please stay tuned.

Cruisers Success Stories

Congratulations to Martha Sandoval Gustafson who was inducted into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame on October 29th.  From the cfpdp website: “Martha competed for Mexico at the 1976 and 1980 Paralympic Games, winning 12 medals. After moving to Canada, she wore the maple leaf at the 1984 and 1988 Games. Competing in athletics, swimming, and table tennis, she increased her medal count to 19, including 12 gold and seven silver. This achievement ranks her as Canada’s second most-decorated Paralympian. She remains an active parasport athlete and has 200+ medals from international, national, and provincial events. Now in her late 60s, she still competes in athletics and swimming and has even tried two distinctly Canadian sports – curling and wheelchair rugby. She boils success down to a simple philosophy, “Compete against yourself and always try to do your best.”

Congratulations to Ken Hall who was honoured at the Coaching Association of Canada Virtual Gala on November 5th where he received a 2020 Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award. From the CAC website: “These prestigious awards recognize coaches whose athletes have excelled at world championships, Olympic and Paralympic Games, and at the Special Olympics World Games. Recipients of the Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Award are some of Canada’s most outstanding national team coaches. These coaches have dedicated their time and efforts to ensuring that athletes reach their potential on the international stage.”
