As we reflect on 2020, we realize that it was like no other year before. We lost family and friends. We felt lonely, isolated and scared. Yet, we persevered. We learned things about the world and about ourselves. We learned the true value of a really nice hug, the joy we feel from seeing a friend smile and the undeniable importance of our family and friends. As I watched my mother’s neighbours rally around her and take turns bringing her groceries, I understood the kindness of the human spirit.
To my Cruisers family, I miss you. I cannot wait to be back on the court with you. Most of all, I feel humbled and grateful to have all of you in my life. I would like to say thank you to all the coaches, volunteers and parents who help to make this organization a community to be proud of. To the athletes, some of you represented Canada, some of you represented Ontario, some of you played for the pure joy of sport and friendship. No matter what your reason was, we thank you for allowing us to share your journey with you.
Cruisers Sports had so many accomplishments this past year. Thanks to Tiffany Gaudette-Cina, our Boccia program was revitalized and continues to run virtually. Thanks to Shawn Courchesne, our Schools Program brought the thrill of ParaSport to hundreds of children. Kyle Pettey (above, left) was inducted into the Ontario Athletics Hall of Fame. Martha Sandavol‑Gustavson (above, right) was inducted into the Canadian Disability Hall of Fame, Ken Hall received Petro‑Canada Coaching Excellence Award from the Coaching Association of Canada. Jessica Lewis (below, left) was named the Female Senior athlete of the year by the Bermuda Government. We were able to host two incredible Para-Athletics meets that saw Cruisers athletes hit personal bests. We had a successful First Shift program with lots of smiles and fun. Andrea Foessel (below, right - second from left) won the Keith Cartwright Sportsmanship award for Ontario athletes. Tamara Steeves (below, right - center) and Erik Robezneiks (below, right - back row right) were both named to the Ontario Provincial Championships All-Star team.
These truly are great accomplishments, but I believe that if each one of us thinks about it, we have done something in 2020 that we did not think we would ever do. It was not easy, it required creativity and resilience. Yet, you all did it. Take the time to celebrate that and feel good about it.
We will look to 2021 with renewed hope that we will see each other soon in person. In the meantime,
Take care of yourselves
Keep on Rolling

At Home Activity Kits!
Over the past couple weeks, our coaches and board members have been delivering our Cruisers Sports’ At Home Activity Kits to all our members. These kits were created to help our members stay active at home, hone in on their sport specific skills, and provide everyone with equipment to be used during virtual training sessions. We’d love to see how you’re using them to stay active – take a photo or video, post it on social media and tag @cruiserssports and we’ll share with our community!
Remarks from our members:
Hello Lisa and Kathy,
I want to tell you both how appreciative and thankful I am to have receive my care package and cruisers gear. I opened my package earlier this week and it almost seemed bottomless. The amount of items for working out at home, gear and apparel to represent the team, and the cute double-sided mask were so amazing to unpack.
I have not had the chance to do much exercise in (or out of) my basketball wheelchair due to the demands of teacher’s college and online schooling. However, I assure you both that once this semester is complete I will use the equipment to better my mental and physical health. I especially loved that there was recognition made for my latex allergy and alternative equipment was provided. It means the world to me to see that such care and effort was put into these packages. I can only speak for myself, but I am certain these acts of kindness did not go unnoticed.
I cannot wait to meet up again some day in person wearing my unique cruisers gear and warm up equipment.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much Lisa and Kathy.
Hey Cruisers Family!
I am just writing to say a massive thank you for the Cruiser’s At Home activity kits. They are quite simply, awesome! I want to give a huge shoutout to the club as a whole and to all of the individuals who put the time and energy into making them. They have provided me with useful tools that I can use to improve both my skills and my general fitness. Not to mention that there are both video and paper instructions that explain/show quite thoroughly what you are supposed to be doing (now there are no excuses). I also think that these kits are multi use because you can use them in your respective offseason or now in the middle of this pandemic we find ourselves in.
I have been going on virtual calls with my team, twice a week and using these kits to compensate for our normal practice slots. Thanks to these kits, I have been able to get my work in and stay connected to my teammates from home (as the “normal” things we usually do are obviously not happening currently). I have been having so much fun as of late (almost as much as you can right now) and our calls have allowed us to get to know each other much better than before. Its been great.
I want to give a special shoutout to all my coaches, you guys have been so giving of your time to our team and we really appreciate it. This has made me really realize the importance of sports and the Cruisers club in my life. Hope to see you all as soon as possible!
Merry Christmas and best wishes!

From the Athletes’ Rep:
This message is long overdue and I apologize. I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself for those who are unfamiliar with who I am and my role within the board of directors.
My name is Bret Wills and I’ve been a member with Cruisers Sports since 1993. During this time I have had the opportunity to participate in Para Ice Hockey, Wheelchair Basketball & Para Athletics.
I have also previously had a role as director of athlete relations on the board.
Within this role, I have acted as a liaison between our athletes and the board.
When I put my name forward for the nomination, nobody could have predicted what we are experiencing now. Our board of directors has been working tirelessly to make sure our members minds are at ease and I want to promise you that your safety is of our upmost importance.
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.
I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org
Yours in Trust,
As part of our strategic planning initiative we took during this past year, the Board has put together a set of core values that embody what we feel our club is about. These values are the driving force behind everything we do, and a template for how we carry it out.
We are pleased to share that Cruisers Sports has been selected by CTJumpstart to receive a grant from their Sport Relief Fund. The fund helps community sport organizations like ours continue to provide access to sport and play for Canadian kids. This grant will go a long way towards helping us to helping offset our programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
That's it until next month! See you all on Saturday!
