March 2019

March 26, 2019: Welcome!

It is with great pride I assume the position of the President of the Board for Cruisers Sports for the Physically Disabled.

First I would like to thank our outgoing Board members for their dedication and commitment to the club over the past years. In particular:

  • Chris Gee for his many years on our Board most notably the last 4 years as President. Chris saw the organization evolve substantially in recent years and has helped create a presence for the Cruisers in the broader community.
  • Crysta M’Keown is a long time dedicated parent and volunteer. Most notably, Crysta would volunteer at many Cruisers events and was a team manager for the junior team. Crysta is always there to help regardless of the function or activity.
  • Jenn Simpson who was our go-to for registration. Most recently she brought the Cruisers into the digital age by introducing “Wild Apricot” as our digital platform to support registration as well as communication. Jenn also spends her time as the current trainer for the Red Dawgs Para Ice Hockey team.
  • Alex Cairns who supported fundraising activities and was very proficient at obtaining various grants to support club initiatives and new activities. Alex demonstrated the courage to volunteer when the fundraising role was made available.

I am pleased to welcome our newest board members.

  • Celine de Regt as Vice President. Celine brings exceptional communication and change management skills to assist us as we move forward with our strategic initiatives.
  • Stephanie Visentin who has transitioned from Secretary to Director of Fundraising, Stephanie brings vast experience in fundraising for various special causes and I look forward to her creativity in identifying opportunities for grants, corporate donations and other fundraising activities.
  • Lisa Myers as Director of Para Athletics. Lisa brings longstanding experience with BC Wheelchair Sports and the knowledge of grants, sport programming, administration and operations to our club.
  • Liza Sneyd as Director of Registration. Liza brings a passion for our community along with strong organizational skills, attention to detail and effective time management expertise.
  • As for myself, my paid job is Controller for Goodyear Canada Inc. My son Christian currently plays on the Silver Streaks Para Ice Hockey team and participated in Para Athletics for his off-season training. As President I will bring specific skills, such as strategic planning, collaboration, communication and change management from my corporate world. I am hoping these skills can assist us into becoming a world-class athletic club.

Thank you to all the members who attended the AGM and voted so your voice can be heard. I appreciate the candid feedback we received at the AGM and via the survey. Please feel confident we hear you and your comments are very important. We will do our best as a board to meet your expectations. Beginning in April you will see a monthly message providing you with an update on the current initiatives and projects being worked on by the club. Please make sure you have signed up to receive communication from the Cruisers in order to be up to date with this and future messages.

I am very excited for the future of the Cruisers as we strive to offer best in class programming and service to our members. Thank you for your continued commitment to the Cruisers. Please feel free to contact me at president@cruisers-sports.com if there is anything you would like to know, share or ask. We are here to support you.

Regards,

Paul Christou, CPA, CMA
