August 2019

August 31, 2019: Here's the August Board update

Hey Cruisers Family!

The August Board meeting saw us looking ahead to new seasons and opportunities.

Registration

A good chunk of our meeting was spent discussing the registration period that is upon us now for the 2019/2020 season. An email went out to all of our membership to sign up on August 17th. In person sign up will be available for each sport in the coming weeks. Dates will be communicated soon.

Cruisers Sports is committed to providing access to accessible sports opportunities at affordable rates. However, as a Board we also spent some time discussing funding options that some of our membership may not be aware of to offset some of these fees, equipment costs and transportation costs. Please check out the following link for an overview of opportunities www.cruisers-sports.com/contacts/links.shtml. If this is pertinent to you, also please consider our own Cruisers bursary application which is also found on the above link.

Lastly, please spread the word. If you know of other people who are interested in our sports, please encourage them to check out our website www.cruisers-sports.com and sign up to participate in the fun!

Apparel and Accessories

The Cruisers Sports online store is now open for business! If you are a first-time member, you will receive an email upon registration that will assist you in making your selections. Returning athletes, family members and friends are also welcome to place orders and purchase their own apparel online. A bulk club order will be placed on Sunday, October 20th, 2019. Coaches will be contacted once orders have arrived and the apparel and/or merchandise can be picked up by athletes at a scheduled practice, game, meet or event. Check out the shop on our website.

Cruisers Success Stories

Some of our successes that we want to highlight was a great Beacham Summer Fun Day with a turn out of 48 youth and their families attending the farm tour, accessible hay ride, sensory trail, sensory room and BBQ.

From the world of Para Athletics, we had 11 Cruisers athletes compete at Nationals, bringing home 8 gold, 1 silver, and 5 bronze medals. In particular, we want to give a huge shout out to Martha Sandoval Gustafson (Team Canada) and Jessica Lewis (Team Bermuda) who will be competing in the Para Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru at the end of August, follow us on Facebook for updates. Lastly, Austin Smeenk and Renee Foessel were automatically selected to the World Para Athletics Championship team due to their results at Nationals and overall world ranking. Congratulations to all of the Para Athletics athletes.

Lastly, Carter Plumb will be representing the Cruisers at the Boccia Provincials at Variety Village in mid-August.

Other Board Topics

We discussed travel grants for athletes traveling long distances for the Cruisers. More details to follow in the coming months.

The Boccia program will run again this year from September to May on Sunday’s from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM. We received a grant from Boccia Canada & CCPSA for recruitment, running two community events and coaching development within the upcoming season. Also, we will continue to offer Boccia for free to Cruisers members and their families. This is a program we would like to grow in the coming years. Please get the word out and come join us.

Preparation for the Cruisers Annual Charity Golf Tournament is well underway. Mark your calendars for Friday, September 13th at the Caledon Country Club located at 2121 Olde Baseline Road, Caledon, ON. This is our biggest fundraising event and has a huge impact in keeping our fees low and ensuring we have the equipment for all of our sports. So, come out and play a round with us or share our event with the golfers in your life. We are open to any sponsorship and donation opportunities for this event.

We have a committee working hard to organize the Annual Cruisers Cup Para Ice Hockey Tournament which will take place November 1st-3rd at South Fletcher’s Sportsplex located at 500 Ray Lawson Blvd. Brampton, ON. This month, a lot of work has been done to get the merchandise ready for the event. Exciting new products and designs are coming for the tournament.

If you would like to volunteer your time in any way to help out at the Cruisers Cup, please reach out to paraicehockey@cruisers-sports.com. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
