April 19, 2019: Your April Monthly Cruisers Update

Hey Cruisers Family!

We would like to provide our members with a Cruisers Sports update for the month of April. This update will include highlights from the April board meeting and attempt to correct an unfortunate oversight from Paul's transition letter. In order to make this right, we would like to take a moment to recognize Americo Morais for his commitment and dedication to Cruisers Sports.

Member Profile: Americo Morais
With a shake of his head and an energetic ONE TWO THREE CRUISERS!!!! being his trademark cheer, I want to apologize for the oversight and recognize the contributions to the club by a valuable and committed individual.

Americo Morais, Cruisers member for over 15 years, All Blacks Captain, Vice President for 9 years, volunteer coach for the juniors and sledge development program, Cruisers Cup master scheduler are just a few of the ways Americo has made an impact on the club and its athletes. Americo joined the club 15 years ago with a passion for sledge hockey, yes I know, Para Ice Hockey. He has participated in other sports, including wheelchair basketball throughout the years but was always drawn back to hockey. Americo is an avid motorcycle rider and the current manager of Sledge Team Ontario.

You will always find a smile on Americo as he played, coached and volunteered during his time with the Cruisers. Thank you Americo for your time and support of the Cruisers and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

Cruisers Gala: May 25, 2019
Organizing an event for 200-300 people is never a small feat however the details for this years Cruisers Gala are coming together nicely. The Board is heavily involved along with a subcommittee including Kelly Calovini; Jennifer Knight and Crysta M’Keown who are dividing up the tasks and brainstorming to make the evening a memorable one. The raffle items from the teams and corporate donations are starting to come in…please send in your raffle items soon so the baskets can get put together. The “big” prizes for the event are being worked on…we can already tell you we have a set of Leafs tickets to win. The awards are being discussed and finalized and the entertainment has been hired…you will be amazed. We hope that you are all able to come join us for this great annual event, if you would like to do more please let us know as we can definitely use some helping hands.

Champions Day 2019
The Cruisers hosted the Ontario Sledge Hockey Association Champions Day at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex in Oakville on April 7th. The event saw 12 teams play for silver and gold medal positions on two rinks. We want to congratulate the Cruisers Red Dawgs for their silver medal position. Great performance for the Red Dawgs in the new Open No Contact Division.

Upcoming Events for the Cruisers

  • Canadian Wheelchair Basketball League National Championships in Charlottetown, PEI -April 25-28
  • Défi Sportif Para Ice Hockey Tournament in Montreal for the Cruisers Juniors team May 3-5
  • Cruisers Classic for the Para Athletics team May 11

Our last survey indicated a desire by our members to get more information about what is going on within our organization. As such, we are going to be increasing the communication to the broader group and intend to provide an update after each Board meeting. We will also be looking at ways to improve our social media presence. If you have questions, feedback or concerns please feel free to reach out to anyone on the Board and we will make every effort to respond.

Thank You,
Your Cruisers Board
