Cruisers' Sports Programs

The Cruisers offer 5 sports programs - Sledge Hockey, Wheelchair Basketball, Track & Field, Boccia & Multi-Sports.

We offer programs year-round, and many of our athletes participate in multiple sports.

Sledge Hockey ...:::... Back to top

Sledge Hockey is the Cruisers’ most popular program. Over 90% of our registered athletes participate either competitively or recreationally on a team.  Sledge hockey is adapted from Canada's national pastime, and provides players of all ages and abilities the opportunity to participate in the game.

Our current program is divided into junior and intermediate levels. Players sit on lightweight sledges that have two modified skate blades attached to the underside of the sledge. Each player uses two specially designed hockey sticks to push themselves across the ice. Read more...

Track & Field ...:::... Back to top

Whether athletes are ambulatory or use a wheelchair, they can participate in many of the events offered in track and field. Athletes are classified by age, disability and ability and compete against others in the same classification.

Cruisers Sports provides athletes with a chance to participate in competitions throughout the province at sanctioned indoor and outdoor meets. Indoor Track and Field practices are held every Sunday morning at Variety Village throughout the fall and winter and changes to outdoor practices from April to October. Read more...

Wheelchair Basketball ...:::... Back to top

As in able-bodied Basketball, players must dribble the ball when having gained control of the ball on the court. It is a traveling violation to take more then two pushes on the wheels without dribbling the ball. Read more...

Boccia ...:::... Back to top

Boccia is a test of muscle control and accuracy, requiring high focus and concentration. The goal of the game is to throw/bowl game balls so that they land as close as possible to a special target ball, the "jack". Boccia is practiced in 42 countries and is open to athletes with severe cerebral palsy or related neurological conditions using a wheelchair. All events are mixed and feature individual, pair and team competitions. It is played on a marked court, usually with a hard surface.

Cruisers Sports provides athletes with a chance to participate in competitions throughout the province at sanctioned meets. Indoor practices are held every Tuesday evening throughout the year. Read more...

Multi-Sports ...:::... Back to top

Multi-Sports is a program designed to teach young children the wheelchair skills they need in a safe, fun environment. Children as young as three participate in a variety of school yard games such as Red Rover, Tag, Basketball, Jockey and other adapted games.

Siblings are welcome to join in the fun in a wheelchair and we have a few extra chairs for them to use. Read more...
