Coach Kelvin Johnston

Nickname: Coach K
Sport: Sledge Hockey

Please list accomplishments / highlights (including placing, location, dates, titles, awards, etc.):
Our appearance at the finals in the 2007 London tournament – coming from behind in almost every game – our kids never gave up.  I was very proud of the team’s results.

What do you like best about coaching and being involved in sports?
Seeing the excitement on their faces.  I remember a couple of years ago while I was coaching soccer, one of the boys who had yet to score a goal all year, got one in the last game of the year – and I will always remember the look on his face when he turned around “I finally did it” – something I will not soon forget.

What sport do you coach or play and what made you decide to do this sport?
I played hockey growing up and figured my kids would end up in it…and now I have 4 in it.  I never thought that when Kennedy was born he would get a chance to play, and sledge gives him that chance, and he loves it

Who are your role models and why?
Scotty Bowman – you don’t have to have been a good player to be a good coach.  He can barely skate, but was the best coach in history.

How are you motivated and what are your goals for the future?
Development of  the kids in the sport but more importantly, development of them as a person – who can they be – and it starts right here and now.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Kids, kids and more kids – With 4 of my kids in hockey and the rep soccer team that I coach, I don’t have much free time.  I do curl one night a week – no kids, I guess that is my time out.

What advice would you have for someone just starting in the sport that you are in?
Patience.  It is not easy to learn… but it comes along and when you get it, you will love it.

What is your favorite saying?
Play hard, play smart and have fun.
